Young Ok Kim: Hanjicraft — Revival of a Joseon Dynasty Artform
March 7 - June 5, 2025
Young Ok was invited by Chief Curator Greg Robinson for a solo show at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.
This exhibit highlighted the breadth of her larger works, augmented by traditional Korean screens that are part of her family’s private collection, including one painted by her sister Young Ju Park - an award winning Oriental brush painter. The exhibit also included a calligraphy table with artwork inspired by Young Ju’s painting of flying geese.
The curation allowed the viewer to see Young OK’s mastery of color and composition, juxtaposing pieces of seemingly different styles but using similar patterning.
The exhibit also featured Young Ok’s process - how the structure of the pieces was built of chipboard and covered by layers of hanji paper.
There were numerous opportunities for the public to engage with Young Ok at receptions, workshops and “Meet the Artist”.
Special thanks to Guest Curator Phoibe Purcell and Dasha Moore!
